Ninth Annual Berlin Vermont Fall Scholastic Chess Tournament

Saturday, November 12, 2011

 Tournament Info:

The tournament will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Berlin Elementary School, Berlin, VT.   This is an unrated tournament open to chess players of all abilities from Kindergarten through Grade 12, where the focus is on fun and sportsmanship.  UCSF membership is not required.  Please bring a chess board and chess clock if you have one.

 Schedule:
Registration open from 9:00 – 9:30 AM.  First round starts at 10:00.  Food concessions will be available from 9 AM until 2 PM.  Awards given at approximately 3:00 PM.

 Directions
From I-89, take exit 7.  Take a left at the first light, then first right onto the school grounds.  Park in the lot only – NO parking in the fire lane (circle) in front of the school.

 Cost
Pre-Register by mail by November 10th or online by November 11th --> $8 per player, or $15 per family.
Register at the door on the day of the event --> $10 per player or $18 per family.

 Tournament Rules:

Players will be grouped into sections according to grade level.  Expected sections will be: Grades K-2, Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6, Grades 7-8 and Grades 9-12.  (The Tournament Director reserves the right to change section groupings depending on attendance.)

The Swiss system will be used, and all players will play four rounds (no-one will be eliminated) although some players may receive a “bye” if there are an odd numbers of players.  This is an unrated tournament, and first round pairing will be by random draw.  Note: USCF rated players are welcome, but their rating will not be used for pairing purposes, and their results will not affect their rating.  The time for each round will be Game/30 (each player has 30 minutes) so no round will last longer than one hour.  Players are encouraged to notate their games, but notation is not required.

Trophies and/or medals will be awarded to the top 5 players in each section.  Ties for first place will be decided by games between tied players or a playoff match.  Standard US Chess Federation tie-break systems will be used (Modified Median, Solkoff, and Cumulative, in that order) to decide ties for subsequent positions.

Spectators are not allowed in the section rooms while games are in progress.  All participants must be in the skittles area (Gym) or outside when not playing – no-one is allowed in the halls or unused rooms.

If you have questions, contact Mike Stridsberg (Tournament Director) at mike@vtchess.info or call (802) 223-1948.
