VERMONT DENKER QUALIFIER

SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2007

 Participants will become eligible for the Vermont Denker Qualifier based on their performance in the High School section of the Vermont Scholastic Chess Championship.  A tournament to determine who will represent Vermont in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Camels Hump Middle School in Richmond, VT.  Participants will arrive at 9 AM and games will begin at 9:30. Further information and selection rules will be posted at http://vtchess.info. This year the Denker tournament is being held in NJ from July 28 to August 2. It is a six day tournament that corresponds with the U.S. Chess Open.

 Denker Qualifier Rules

  • The Denker Qualifier is open only to Vermont High School boys and girls in grades 9 to 12, including home schoolers.

  • Students must have competed in the Vermont Scholastic Chess Championship on April 7, 2007

  • All players must be under the age of 19 on September 1 of the year in which the Denker Tournament is held

  • A score of 3.5 points or higher is necessary to be eligible, assuming the tournament is 5 games. This includes byes that the student may have received. If the High School tournament is only four games, then a score of 3 points or higher is necessary to be eligible.

  • The Denker Qualifier will be a USCF rated tournament, except any playoff games, and follow USCF rules.

  • The format of the Denker Qualifier will be determined once the number of competitors is known and games will be no longer than G/60

  • Seeding for the tournament will be based on a USCF rating and the HS tournament performance.

  • The winner of the qualifier will be Vermont’s Denker representative. A first and second alternate will also be chosen.

  • Playoff games may be necessary to determine the final standings if players are tied in points. Any necessary tiebreaker game will be decided by a G/15 and will not be rated.

  • Observers will be allowed in the tournament hall, however, they may be asked to leave the hall by the room monitor or tournament director if they are not quiet.

  • The winner of the tournament must decide if they will attend the national tournament by April 21.

  • Scholarship money is available to Vermont Denker representative to help
    with a portion of the national Denker Tournament expenses. The Denker representative will be expected to write a brief summary of their experience in the Denker National Tournament, including their favorite game, which will be posted on the VTCHESS.INFO website.

 

2007 Polgar Selection

The Polgar Tournament is a national competition for girls under the age of 19, including grade and middle school age students. It is being held at the same time and place as the Denker Tournament. The 2007 Vermont representative will be selected based on performance in the state and other scholastic tournaments, U.S.C.F. rating, and possibly a playdown. Further information and selection rules will be posted at http://vtchess.info.

  • The Polgar Tournament is only open to girls who are under the age of 19 as of September 1, 2007.

  • A Vermont scholastic chess committee will decide on candidates for Polgar selection based on their performance in the Vermont Scholastic Chess Championships and other tournaments and their U.S.C.F rating.

  • Possible candidates will be contacted shortly after the conclusion of Vermont Scholastic Chess Championships to determine interest in attending the Polgar Tournament.

  • If a match is necessary to determine a representative and alternate, the games will be Game 60 (G/60) or shorter and follow USCF rules. If the players are tied in points at the conclusion of the match, a G/15 format that will be used to determine the winner.

  • A match could occur at the Denker qualifier, the Burlington Chess Club on Thursday night between 8 and 10, or at a time and place to be determined.

  • Any necessary playoff games may or may not be USCF rated.

  • Scholarship money is available to Vermont Polgar representative to help
    with a portion of the national Polgar Tournament expenses.

  • The Polgar representative will be expected to write a brief summary of their experience in the Polgar National Tournament, including their favorite game, which will be posted on the VTCHESS.INFO website.

 

DIRECTIONS to the 2007 Vermont Denker Qualifier:  Camels Hump Middle School in Richmond is approximately 25 miles west of Montpelier and 11 miles east of Burlington. Take Interstate 89 exit 11 (US-2 Richmond/Bolton); drive east towards the village of Richmond on Route 2 for 1.6 miles; turn left (north) at the traffic light in the center of town onto Jericho Road; and continue 1/2 mile up the hill and turn left onto School Street to Camels Hump Middle School, just before the Interstate overpass.
